From the Destroyed Earth

Obliviousness

My first larger piece, “From the Destroyed Earth” was my first serious exploration into paint and collage. In this painting, I wanted to explore the theme of the environment and humanity’s seeming obliviousness regarding the harm being done to the Earth, and therefore ourselves. Using magazine images and cutouts from pop culture posters (most importantly the arms), I wanted to incorporate distractions that aid in maintaining our blindness.

Techniques used in this painting are things I have explored in more detail throughout the years. I have also expanded upon this aesthetic style, most notably the figure’s skin. I created this piece following Wangechi Mutu’s 2009 exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario, This You Call Civilization?

The Plan

Exploring collage and paint for the first time, in this early project I wanted to use photographic images to illustrate oblivious self-harm through the figure’s grotesque abuse and simultaneous uncanny likeness to humanity.
