Class 2: Rethinking Literacy
Reading: Brayboy, B.M.J., & Maughan, E. (2009). Indigenous knowledges and the story of the bean. Harvard Education Review, 79(1). 1-21.
Rowsell, J. & Walsh, M. (2011). Rethinking literacy education in new times. Brock education, 21(1). (Short)
Following some housekeeping and questions about the syllabus, in this class we will explore the SAMR model as a way of conceptualizing the use of technology in classroom contexts, including thinking through potential uses of padlet (as an example) and your experiences building your websites for the course.
We will then dive deep into the two articles for this week, unpacking new terms/concepts and the ‘big ideas’ from each, and will consider how Indigenous ways of knowing (Brayboy & Maughan) might influence and reframe our thinking regarding literacy (Rowsell & Walsh). We will end the class briefly discussing the final project (more on this next week), and going over production 2.
Be prepared with your note-taking system (however you tracked your reading of the articles), as it will come in handy when working on the texts both in small groups and then in full-class discussion.
