Class 3: Putting Multimodality to Work & ‘Serious Play’ for (L2/ELL) Learning
Reading: Lotherington, H. & Jenson, J. (2011). Teaching multimodal & digital literacy in L2 settings: New literacies, new basics, new pedagogies. Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, 31, 226-246. (Read Closely)
In this class we will engage with the reading for this week (Lotherington & Jenson, 2011) in the first part of class, including thinking through the two key ideas: multimodality and ‘serious play.’ This will include thinking through how multimodal literacy practices open up different kinds of experiences with texts compared with traditional reading practices, drawing from new/digital/multi-literacies to supplement the discussion.
In the second part of class, we will be exploring Comic Life in preparation for production 3. A computer is required for this part of class. We will work through exploring the features of comic life together, including a short demo and group play with the tool.
The final 20 minutes will be dedicated to exploring examples for the final project, and some preliminary thinking about final projects in your groups.

While the authors did not use Comic Life, this is a great example of a digitally-produced visual narrative (with music/interactivity): Totality for Kids – need to enable Flash to run
