Class 4 (public)

Class 4 Participatory Culture & (DIY) Media Production

In the first part of class, we will watch Joslyn Young’s “From Research to ‘Action!’ – Learning through Video Production” as a foundation for our discussions surrounding connections to previous concepts in the course and the accompanying article by Young. We will work through key ideas, including the idea of ‘communities of practice,’ and consider how our own experiences in various communities of practice might shape how we teach towards fostering community in classrooms. After working through the main ideas from our second article by Henry Jenkins, we will have a quick break.

Following break, we will divide up the skills Jenkins details in his report amongst student groups, and collaboratively consider how each skill might feature in our classroom practice. In the last 40 minutes or so, we will discuss Production 4 (forthcoming) and work through the parameters of the final project, including looking at four diverse examples (see ‘final project’ tab for links). The remainder of class time will be set aside for asking questions and investigating/downloading/beginning to work with video editing software for students who would like to begin this work before they leave.
