Cancerous Vanity

Exploring Nature and Technology

As part of a project at OCADU, I painted “Cancerous Vanity” as a way to explore a common theme in my work (nature) through the lens of technology. Each petals’ design was inspired by the way different cancer cells look under a microscope. Shocked by the aesthetic beauty of something so terrible, I used the intersection of nature and technology as an opportunity to consider the subtle beauty of ultimately harmful things.

This painting is on a 36″ x 36″ canvas, and I experimented with palette knife work for this piece, while also expanding on transparent acrylic techniques. I used PhotoShop during my process work to merge images.

This piece was auctioned off as part of the Super Wyatt charity auction in Peterborough, Ontario in the Summer of 2013 to support a local family’s costs while their son received treatment at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

The Plan

Inspired by the use of technology to view nature, I chose to explore using technology as part of my process work. This image is one of many experiments I explored through Adobe PhotoShop before deciding on one to base my painting off of.
